Several years ago I received a scroll saw as a Christmas present. It was a basic Craftsman model -- no bells and whistles, but good enough to cut small projects out of wood. For a few years I cut basic patterns that I both found on the internet and in scroll saw magazines.
After time though, I began to get bored with the patterns and wanted to do more customized and personalized work. I read through Gary Browning's excellent Scroll Saw Portraits: How to Turn Photographs into Wooden Keepsakes book and was determined to try my hand at it. I began by using a photo of Patty, our Irish Setter. Developing the first pattern took several weeks to complete -- even though I had read the book, I wasn't really sure what I was doing. The end result came out far better than I would have expected!
Since then I've become more familiar with the graphics program and have been able to speed up the development process. Finding time to get out into the workshop is always a challenge with 4 kids and 2 dogs at home, but I hope you enjoy the results!
